Based on a true story, the film follows young hackers from Hannover, Germany, in the late 1980s. Orphaned Karl Koch spends his inheritance on a flat and a home computer, initially dialing bulletin boards to discuss conspiracy theories inspired by R.A. Wilson's "Illuminatus." He and his friend David soon begin breaking into government and military computers. Pepe, a criminal acquaintance, sees money in computer cracking and travels to East Berlin to contact the KGB.
