Steffen Mensching and Hans-Eckardt Wenzel, acclaimed East German poets, songwriters, and clowns, present a loose cabaret satire of life in East Germany's final days and the changes after the Berlin Wall fell. The clowns are released from prison to sing for people outside, but as they perform, the country descends into rebellion, the prison is attacked and looted, and the people chase them away. The film was the first made by an artistic group that had long fought for independence within the state-owned DEFA studio. Its title, Da-Da-R, plays on the Dada art movement and the German acronym for East Germany, the DDR.
