Private Internal Troops Andrei Ivin, a typical humanist who left the historical and archival institute, is poorly suited to military service. While on night tower duty one summer, he fails to shoot escaping recidivist Mishka Knyaz and is forced before a tribunal. In his explanatory note, Ivin writes that he refuses to continue to dispose of someone else's life. Under company commander Narotiev, he is sent to the disbat. Narotiev, nearly Ivin's age, finds it hard to believe the private's truth, suspecting he simply froze during testimony and fell asleep at his post, or perhaps chickened out.
