Set during the revolutionary collapse of socialism in 1989/1990, when the walled-in GDR merged with the free Federal Republic of Germany, the film follows an East German teacher's son who rejects the GDR, weary of endless claims of socialist superiority and the gray dreariness of everyday life. His mother, the convinced teacher and communist Christine Rautmann, realizes that her lifelong propaganda about a golden socialist future resonates with neither her son nor her pupils. Suddenly confronted with the ruins of her life as a teacher and mother, she becomes a seeker on tremendously shaky social ground.
