This ambitious black comedy interweaves three loosely connected tales. An elderly landowning couple, diminished by economic hardship and reformist politics, scrimp to afford a marble tomb that will preserve their remains in the style they still aspire to. They give their now-blind former housekeeper a pig that becomes more trouble than it's worth, as fattening it up destroys what little family she has left. Meanwhile, one of the couple's tenants, the host of a relentlessly optimistic radio self-help show, tries to follow his own counsel after saving a young woman from suicide.
