Ronia enjoys life in her father's castle until she discovers a new playmate, Birk, in the nearby dark forest. The two children explore the wilderness and brave dangerous Witchbirds and Rump-Gnomes. When their families learn of their friendship, they forbid the pair from meeting again, since their fathers are competing robber chieftains and bitter enemies. Now Ronia and Birk must try to tear down the barriers that have kept their families apart for so long.
