Plot
In 1984 County Durham, 11-year-old Billy Elliot stumbles into a ballet class after boxing and discovers a natural talent. He trains with Mrs. Wilkinson for an audition at the Royal Ballet School in London.

Set in County Durham, England, in 1984, the story unfolds against the miners' strike, as police arrive from Bethnal Green and class tensions deepen. Eleven-year-old Billy Elliot, caught in the middle, leaves his boxing club one day and happens upon a ballet class, where he learns he has a natural gift. He begins practicing with his teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson, to prepare for an upcoming audition in Newcastle-upon-Tyne for the Royal Ballet School in London.
