Living far from the capital with her father, energetic Ginga learns she could become a concubine to the young Emperor and possibly his head wife. She persuades her father to let her go and joins other candidates, each with their own reasons for being there. They study reading, writing, history, and court manners. Ginga's enthusiasm causes trouble, but it proves useful when they discover the former emperor's head wife is plotting treachery and a rebellion is approaching the capital.
