ABC of a Strike presents footage of the 1979 metal workers strikes outside São Paulo, left unedited until after the death of director Leon Hirszman in 1987. The film shows negotiations between labor unions and factory bosses, the birth of the region's Workers' Party, and the rise of its charismatic leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Rising from extreme poverty, Lula became a prominent union activist in the late 70s and early 80s, was jailed as a union leader, and later served as Brazil's president from 2003 to 2010.
