In this earlier version of So Long at the Fair (1950), Séraphine and her mother come to Paris for the 1867 World Exhibition. The city is so crowded that they must stay in different hotels. Overnight, her mother—already unwell—takes a sudden turn for the worse. The next morning, Séraphine discovers every trace of her mother has disappeared, and everyone denies having ever met her. The bewildered young woman must find someone who believes her story.
