Ho Fan's Yu Pui Tsuen (The Carnal Prayer Mat, 1987) preceded Michael Mak's Sex and Zen. Lacking Amy Yip, coarse humor, or lesbian affairs, it depended on its relatively unknown cast's nudity. A young man dreams he drowns after passion and asks a Buddhist monk to interpret it. The monk says it warns against excessive fleshly pleasure, but the man disregards him, marries a virgin, and makes love constantly. After several torrid affairs, he begins to see the monk's warning was wise.
