In a music shop, musician Max Tooney plays his prized Conn trumpet one last time before selling it. The shopkeeper recognizes the song from a record matrix he found and asks who composed it. Tooney explains the piece's origin by telling the story of an infant discovered abandoned in the first class dining room of the SS Virginian on January 1, 1900. Danny Boodman, a coal-man from the boiler room, names the boy Danny Boodman T. D. Lemon 1900—after himself, the fruit crate the child was found in, and the year—and raises him as his own.
