After moving from New Jersey to Los Angeles with his mother, Daniel LaRusso begins a relationship with Ali, only to become the target of her ex-boyfriend Johnny and his gang of Cobra Kai karate students, who train under the ruthless sensei John Kreese. Daniel befriends Mr. Miyagi, an unassuming repairman who is also a martial arts master. Miyagi takes Daniel under his wing, teaching him a more compassionate style of karate for self-defense and preparing him to compete against the brutal Cobra Kai.
