When a gray wolf raised on a farm kills the family dog, a boy named Lasset sets out with the animal on a 300-mile trek through the wilderness to a sanctuary in the north, hoping to spare him from being destroyed. The film's background music consists entirely of Dvorak's Serenade for Strings, making it a rare anime to use a single classical piece as its soundtrack. Though the plot is simple and the outcome obvious, the atmosphere is genuine and the music adds emotional depth to this straightforward drama about the friendship between a boy and his wolf.
